In-class Activity:Event

The Trayvon Martin shooting to me was an event that I'll always remember. I was in sixth grade at the time and still quite ignorant to the harsh realities of the world. Aware of racism and racial profiling yet I never gave much thought about it. Until one tragic day news broke out a teenage boy about five years older than me had been gunned down by neighborhood watchman named Zimmerman. It's hard to fathom at the age of twelve that this young man was shot because, a police officer was supposedly scared of him as he innocently walked with a bottle of Arizona and Skittles while talking to his girlfriend on the phone. Zimmerman called the police saying he was saw someone "suspicious" and the police basically told him to mind his business and they'll investigate but he took matters into his own hands and ended a life. A life that will never see their parents or friends again, and pursue their dreams. Zimmerman took that life away and it makes me sick to my stomach to think about it because nobody deserves to die like that. I remember looking at my brothers who were around Trayvon's age at the time and being worried for them and from time to time I still worry for their safety being a man of color in America and all men and women like us. Because, the world is cruel and harsh or maybe just the people in it.
