"God"

I honestly was a bit confused by this particular story. However, the way the author depicts an imagery with the poem, it shows his clear understanding of what Nutella and "God" are like. When the author decided to add lines of his own to the poem, it gave the story more of a push and an idea on what was likely to happen next. The part where Melanie, also known as "God" lost her virginity towards the end of the story was not exactly a surprise to me because the poem and the beginning of the story sort of hinted towards the strong praise of the character for even writing the poem. Melanie was mostly "worshiped" throughout the story by fraternity members, and then the author mentions "pre-ejaculation" on Nutella's part. These little hints in the story are ideally strong enough for the reader to realize that something would've most likely happened between the narrator and "God", simply because the narrator was intrigued by Melanie's ways of writing, and got obsessed over it to the point where he memorized particular lines of the poem, and added lines of his own.

  1. I find it interesting that you found the story pretty predictable in a way. You weren't surprised to know she was a virgin? That 100% caught me off guard. I also didn't think that something would have happened between the narrator and "God". I thought the narrator was crushing hard on Nutella and didn't really want anyone else, especially "God". I think "God" knew that the narrator was crushing on Nutella as well, because she says " I didn't expect this with you.. first wrong impression". I got that she had thought he was gay, thats why she didn't expect it from him. It's a good catch from you that you happened to notice something would eventually happen between them, as I never thought so.

  2. This is interesting. I can see what both of you are saying. I, too, was surprised that Melanie and the narrator had sex b/c as Nyah points out, Oprah is clearly a repressed homosexual. However, I wasn't surprised that Melanie was a virgin. This is a narrative cliche. A famous example is in the movie American Beauty, but it's been done before. Essentially, the irony is supposed to be that the "slutty girl" is really a virgin. The truth is that a lot of young people want to lose their virginity and some can come off as a bit aggressive which may make them seem confident or experienced.
