What Makes a Poem

I belive the most strongest elements in creating a poem is having some experience of your own in order to relate to someone who has been through similar events like you. You should have the ability to step into someone else's shoes and seeing what life is like through their eyes, so that you are able to connect with an audience through your experiences as well. Most poems that poets have written are based upon their life experiences or naturally occuring events that everyone can relate to, such as heartbreaks, friendships, relationships, religion and more. Thinking outside the box is also another way of apporaching to compose a poem. For example, rhyme schemes and choosing particualr words that fit together with meaning is what also makes a poem more effective. You can choose any theme of your liking but it also has to be releatable in order for it to be understood completely. That is how i normally approach poetry.

  1. Good, Shiann, but would it be possible to write successful poems that don't relate to an audience? Or, put another way, as a reader, could you relate to reading poems that you don't "relate to"? Is it necessary to have been through similar experiences to like a poem?
