The men who were hung had ants crawling on them as they were soon to be destroyed. I can imagine them getting mutilated. This poem was really disturbing. This reminded me of when Jesus was sent to try to be killed on the cross for our sins. The poem doesn't specify if the hanging men were innocent or not. So that's all I got from that poem.
Danielle: Monica Youn has a series of "hanged man/men" poems. Here's one at poets.org: https://poets.org/poem/interrogation-hanged-man
ReplyDeleteThere is no description of ants crawling over the hanged men in the poem. In fact, they're crawling out of "a / heaped-up hole in the sand" (an anthill). The image of Jesus comes from the painting that I posted on the blog. Check it out and then look at the poem again.
