Finishing Underground 2

Speaking of the end of the world, why do you think end-of-the-world narratives are so popular w/ the general, non-cult public, stories like The Matrix, zombie films and TV shows, I Am Legend, etc.? What appeals to us about these stories?

For media, I feel like the creators want an unusual setting like the world ending is the most extreme idea out there. It gives a sense of urgency for the MC and his life which is now completely different. Also, it's almost impossible to prove that XYZ would be completely different since no one has an idea if or when the world will end so there's a lot of artistic freedom.
